Creating Hygge In Your Backyard

Have you heard of Hygge? Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) comes from a Danish word that means “give comfort and joy.” Hygge is less about THINGS and more about lifestyle. It is about creating an atmosphere around you that creates a positive outlook on life and brings joy and fulfillment to your soul.

In fact, the feeling of Hygge is just that. A feeling. All it takes is for you to realize and acknowledge those special moments that are happening, be present, and enjoy those moments.

I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but with summer just around the corner, and things almost getting back to “normal”, I can’t wait to have parties/bbq’s and just see my friends and family again. I’m sure most of you can relate!

If you are looking for some guidance and would like a step-by-step guide on how to throw a fun, stress-free party, I have also created The Ultimate Party Planning Timeline & Checklist just for you!

Here are some simple tips on how you can create a welcoming, positive, environment in your backyard in the hopes of having your family and friends over again to create beautiful memories!

1. Bring the Indoors, Outdoors

Hygge is about feeling cozy and comfortable in your space. One way to make your backyard feel extra cozy is to have a comfy set of patio furniture with some pillows and even a couple throw blankets. The trick is not to put too many pillows or throws, however, because you don’t want to clutter the space. Just a touch will work!

Another way to bring the indoors, outdoors? How about having an outdoor movie night! Again, the feeling of Hygge is about experiences and enjoying moments with family and friends. Why not create a relaxing outdoor space and enjoy the outdoors by just watching a movie? Outdoor lounge chairs, throw pillows and blankets. Sounds like a fun, but relaxing night to me!

2. Put Up Some Lighting

When I say lighting, I don’t mean those bulky bright lights! Hanging some dainty twinkling lights in your backyard will really spruce up the space. It makes it look cheery and festive, but also brings a sort of calmness to the space. I know personally, I have string lights hanging around my back deck. I love just sitting out on the deck with a drink and just doing absolutely NOTHING. It really does bring a sense of calmness to me.

3. Don’t Forget A Fire

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat around a fire pit with friends or family and just talk, reminisce, laugh, and even enjoy a S’more (or two!) Having a fire really sets a cozy mood and is just a great way for you to gather with friends and family and create memories. A fireplace (indoor or outdoor) is an important element to Hygge decor because it represents warmth and togetherness!
